Congenital Penile Curvature Treatment in London

Specialist assessment and surgical correction of congenital penile curvature

Congenital penile curvature is a condition in which the penis curves during erection because of differences in the development of the tissues of the penis.

Unlike Peyronie’s disease, congenital penile curvature is not caused by a scar or plaque developing later in life. Many men notice the curvature during puberty or when they first become sexually active, although some may only become concerned about it later.

More About Degree of Curvature

A degree of curvature can be completely normal. However, significant curvature can affect sexual intercourse, make certain sexual positions difficult or uncomfortable, or cause concerns about appearance and confidence.

When correction is appropriate, surgery can provide a reliable way of straightening the penis while preserving erectile function.

How We'll Perform Your Assessment

The first step is a detailed consultation to understand how the curvature affects you.

When you first noticed the curvature

Whether the curvature has always been present

The direction and degree of the curvature Whether intercourse is difficult or uncomfortable

Your erectile function

Any concerns about penile length or appearance

Previous surgery or treatment

A physical examination is performed to assess the penis and exclude other causes of curvature, particularly Peyronie’s disease.

It can also be useful to provide photographs of the erect penis taken at home from different angles. This allows the direction and degree of curvature to be assessed accurately.

When does congenital curvature require treatment?

Not every congenital curvature requires correction. If the curvature is mild and does not interfere with sexual intercourse, treatment may not be necessary. Surgery may be considered when the curvature:

Makes sexual intercourse difficult or impossible

Causes pain or discomfort during intercourse

Prevents satisfactory penetration

Causes significant psychological distress

Has a substantial effect on sexual confidence or quality of life

The decision to operate is ultimately a personal one. Dr Giulio’s role is to explain the degree of curvature, the available surgical options and the potential benefits and limitations so that you can make an informed decision.

Surgical correction of congenital penile curvature

The main surgical techniques used to correct congenital curvature are based on shortening the longer side of the penis or, in selected cases, lengthening the shorter side.

Penile plication

Penile plication is the most commonly used surgical approach for many men with congenital curvature. Advantages include: Reliable correction of curvature A relatively straightforward surgical procedure Preservation of the erectile tissues No need for a graft in most cases Relatively rapid recovery

Corporoplasty and reconstructive techniques

In men with more severe or complex curvature, alternative reconstructive techniques may be considered. In selected cases, the shorter side of the penis can be lengthened rather than shortening the longer side. This is a more complex approach and is not necessary for the majority of patients. The choice of technique is made individually, with the aim of achieving the best balance between straightening the penis, preserving length and maintaining erectile function.

A minimally invasive approach

Congenital penile curvature correction can generally be performed using a relatively small incision and refined surgical techniques. The operation is performed under anaesthesia, and the precise surgical approach depends on the degree and direction of the curvature. During surgery, the penis is carefully assessed to confirm the extent of the deformity and ensure that the planned correction is appropriate. The aim is to achieve a straight, functional penis while preserving sensation and erectile function.

Your Doubts, Our Solutions

What can I expect after surgery?

Some swelling, bruising and discomfort are expected during the early postoperative period. These usually improve progressively as healing takes place.

You will receive detailed instructions regarding wound care, pain relief and physical activity.

Sexual intercourse and vigorous sexual activity should be avoided until the tissues have healed adequately. The exact timing will be discussed during your follow-up.

The majority of patients are able to return gradually to normal activities, although recovery varies from person to person.

Will surgery affect my erections or sensation?

One of the key objectives of congenital curvature surgery is to preserve normal erectile function and penile sensation.

Because the operation is performed on the structures surrounding the erectile tissues rather than removing the erectile tissue itself, erectile function is generally preserved.

As with any penile surgery, however, there are potential risks, including changes in sensation, residual curvature, recurrence, palpable sutures and changes in penile length. These risks will be discussed in detail during your consultation.

Congenital curvature versus Peyronie’s disease

It is important to distinguish congenital curvature from Peyronie’s disease.

Congenital penile curvature

  • Usually becomes apparent during puberty or early sexual life
  • Is present because of differences in penile development
  • Does not result from a Peyronie’s plaque
  • Does not typically progressively develop later in life
  • Is usually treated surgically when the curvature causes functional or psychological problems

Peyronie’s disease

  • Develops later in life
  • Is caused by scar tissue within the penis
  • May cause pain and progressive curvature
  • Can be associated with penile shortening or hourglass deformity
  • May be treated with medical, injection or surgical therapies depending on the stage and severity

An accurate diagnosis is therefore an important first step before deciding on treatment.

Choosing the right operation

There is no single operation that is suitable for every curvature.

The surgical plan depends on:

The degree and direction of curvature

Penile length

The location of the curvature

Erectile function

The presence of any associated deformity

Your expectations regarding straightening and penile length
