Vasectomy

What is a vasectomy?

Vasectomy, also known as male sterilization, represents a permanent method of contraception. During the procedure the surgeon cuts and seals the tubes (vas deferens) that carries the sperm from the testicles to the semen.

This prevents the sperm from being released during ejaculation, making a men sterile.

How is the vasectomy carried out?

The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and takes around 30 minutes.

What to expect after a vasectomy?

It is not uncommon to feel some discomfort after the procedure, but usually patients are able to resume all activities within 2 weeks from surgery

How long after a vasectomy can I have unprotected sex?

You will not be sterile immediately after a vasectomy, as some of the sperms have already passed beyond the point where the tubes have been tied off.

On average you will need 20 t0 30 ejaculations to clear them.

12 weeks after the vasectomy you will need to undergo a semen analysis. If no sperms are detected in the test, you can then engage in unprotected sex.
